Lens Treatments

A lens treatment is a special additive that either bonds with the lens or is built into the lens during the lens manufacturing process. Lens treatments are available as individual additions to lenses, and are also commonly bundled into single lens products for convenience and maximum benefit to your eyes.

Common Lens Coatings & Treatments:

UV Protection

Ultraviolet (UV) rays are present outdoors every day, whether it’s sunny or cloudy, and prolonged exposure can seriously harm your eyes. Just as we protect our skin with sunscreen, our eyes also need protection from harmful UVA and UVB rays. Over time, UV exposure can contribute to age-related eye conditions such as cataracts, macular degeneration, and photokeratitis, making it essential to wear lenses that block nearly 100% of UV light.

Modern eyeglass lenses and sunglasses can have UV protection built directly into the lens or applied as a lens treatment. Unlike sunscreen, which must be reapplied, UV-protective lenses provide continuous defence, safeguarding your vision from both short-term and long-term damage. Always ensure your eyewear meets high UV protection standards to maintain healthy eyesight while outdoors in Singapore’s tropical climate.

Scratch Resistant

Scratch-resistant lenses are not completely scratch-proof, but they help minimise everyday wear and tear on your eyewear. Modern lenses often have a hard surface treatment built in to resist scratches, though this is not automatic, so always confirm with your eye care professional. While scratches may not impact lens performance, they can interfere with clear vision, especially for children or active users. Proper care, such as storing glasses in a cushioned case and cleaning with warm, soapy water and a soft cloth, can further protect your lenses and prolong their clarity and lifespan.

Anti-Reflective

Anti-reflective lenses enhance comfort, improve vision, and reduce glare from reflections, including oncoming headlights. By applying specially calibrated metal oxide layers on the front and back of the lenses, reflected light is minimised, making your eyes appear clearer and vision more defined. This treatment also improves the cosmetic appearance of high-powered prescriptions and reduces annoying halos around lights at night. Anti-reflective coatings can be applied to sunglasses as well, but care should be taken to clean them only with recommended agents, as the coating is delicate and designed to maximise clarity and visual comfort.
