How To Test For Eyesight?
How To Test For Eyesight?

When most people think of an eye test, they imagine standing in a dimly lit room, covering one eye, and trying to read a row of increasingly tiny letters. While the classic letter chart is still a staple of the industry, modern eye testing in Singapore has evolved into a sophisticated blend of digital imaging, computerised tracking, and clinical expertise.

At Eyesight.sg, we believe that the more you know about how the tests work, the more comfortable you’ll feel during your visit. Here is a look at the various ways we measure your vision and why each step is necessary for a crystal-clear result.

1. The Starting Point: Subjective vs. Objective Testing

Testing your eyesight is divided into two main categories: what the machines see (objective) and what you see (subjective).

The Objective Phase: The Autorefractor

Before you even say a word, we use a machine called an Autorefractor.

  • How it works: You rest your chin on a stable base and look at a small image (usually a hot air balloon or a house) inside the machine. The device bounces light off the back of your eye to measure how it focuses.
  • Why we do it: This gives our optometrists a highly accurate starting point for your prescription in seconds. It is invaluable for children or those who find it hard to describe their vision.

The Subjective Phase: The Phoropter

This is the part where you become the judge. We use a Phoropter, that large, mask-like instrument filled with dozens of lenses.

  • How it works: Your optometrist will flip between different lens strengths, asking the famous question: Which is clearer, one or two? * Why we do it: No two brains process images the same way. This fine-tunes the machine’s data to match your personal comfort and clarity.

2. Testing for Sharpness: Visual Acuity

The most famous part of any eye test is the Snellen Chart (the alphabet chart).

  • The Goal: To determine your visual acuity, the clarity or sharpness of your vision at a distance.
  • The 20/20 Standard: In Singapore, we often use the metric equivalent (6/6). If you have 6/6 vision, it means you can see at 6 metres what a normal person should see at that distance.

If you find yourself squinting at the 6/12 line, it’s a clear indicator of Myopia (short-sightedness), which is incredibly common among Singaporeans of all ages. You can read more about managing this on our Myopia in Children page.

3. Testing for Shape: Astigmatism Dial

If you’ve ever noticed that lights look like streaks at night or that certain letters look shadowed, you might have Astigmatism.

  • How we test it: We often use a chart that looks like a sunburst or a clock face with many radiating lines.
  • What to look for: If some lines appear darker or thicker than others, it indicates that your cornea is shaped more like a rugby ball than a football. We use specific cylindrical lenses to correct this during the exam.

4. The Digital Deep Dive: Retinal Imaging & Scans

At Eyesight.sg, testing your eyesight isn't just about how well you see; it’s about the health of the camera itself.

  • Digital Fundus Photography: We take a high-resolution photo of the back of your eye. This allows us to see the retina, optic nerve, and blood vessels in incredible detail.
  • Slit-Lamp Examination: This is a high-powered microscope that allows the optometrist to look at the front of your eye (the cornea and lens) in 3D. This is how we test for cataracts or signs of dry eye caused by too much screen time.

5. Can You Test Your Eyesight at Home?

With the rise of online eye tests and smartphone apps, many people ask if they can skip the clinic visit.

  • The Reality Check: Home tests can be a fun way to screen for major changes, but they have significant limitations. An app cannot check your eye pressure (for Glaucoma), it cannot look at the health of your retina, and it cannot accurately measure how your eyes work together as a team.
  • The Wait and See Risk: Many eye conditions, such as high eye pressure, have no symptoms in the early stages. By the time you fail a home vision test, the condition may already be advanced.

6. Testing for the Hidden Issues: Binocular Vision

Sometimes, your eyesight is 6/6, but you still get headaches or feel like the words are dancing on the page. In these cases, we test your Binocular Vision.

  • The Cover Test: We cover one eye and then the other while you focus on a target. This shows us if your eyes are misaligned or if one eye is working harder than the other (a lazy eye).
  • Depth Perception: We use specialized 3D images to see how well your brain combines the signals from both eyes to perceive depth.

Why Testing in Singapore is Unique?

Our lifestyle in Singapore,high-density living, heavy academic pressure, and constant digital connectivity, means our eyes face more stress than previous generations. Because of this, a standard eye test at Eyesight.sg is more rigorous. We don't just want you to see the letters on the wall; we want to ensure your eyes can handle a 10-hour workday or a night drive along the PIE safely.

What Should You Bring to Your Test?

To get the most accurate result when you come in for a test, we recommend:

  • Your Current Glasses/Contacts: This helps us see how much your vision has changed.
  • A List of Medications: Some medicines (like those for blood pressure or allergies) can cause dry eyes or blurry vision.
  • Your Visual Context: Tell us if you work on two monitors, use a tablet for drawing, or play sports. We test your vision for the life you actually lead.

Conclusion: A Test is More Than a Number

Whether it’s the puff of air test for pressure or the which is better lens check, every part of the eye exam at Eyesight.sg is designed to build a complete map of your visual health. Your eyesight isn't just a number on a prescription card; it’s your primary way of experiencing the world.

Regular testing is the only way to ensure that clear stays clear for years to come.
